The God Who Weep's

Hello Everybody! I can't believe that this will be the last email of my mission. These past two weeks have been truly amazing for us. Let me get right to it! Also, I'm sorry for not sending an email last week! Last P-day we had a multi-zone sports day with three zones here in Ogden. Then I had a "My Plan" meeting for missionaries going home. It is just basically you setting goals and plans for what you will do when you are home. Nothing too exciting hahaha.  Since I've gotten here we have been able to find a handful of friends. About 13 or so. This past week we were able to set a date with three of them! The first was our friend Nixon. Nixon is an unbaptized youth who wasn't too involved in the church. Oddly enough his younger brother was baptized about a year ago. After being "randomly" placed in a seminary class at his high school, Nixon now has expressed interest. We were able to set a baptismal date with Nixon for March 18th. The second date wa...

T Minus 2 Weeks

Hello Everybody! Happy late valentines day everybody. The most insignificant holiday as a missionary! The past two weeks have for sure been a hoot.  Two weeks ago we wrapped up our zone conferences for the mission! It was a bittersweet moment for sure. Bitter because the zone conference is awesome and I love the spiritual side of it and seeing everyone. But bitter because the work that goes into it is sometimes a lot...I enjoyed it nonetheless. President and Sister Scheltinga focused on the importance of integrity and being a "real" missionary, and focusing on the doctrine of baptism with our friends. I was also able to give one last training with my MTC comp, Elder Trindade. We were able to talk about being an effective teacher.  Logistical things aside we have been greatly blessed in this area! We have been able to find at least 2-3 people a week. One of the kids is named Nixon. Nixon is an unbaptized youth. His parents are members, and his little brother was just recently ...

Who does God's work will get God's pay!

Greetings Everyone! And happy start to February! I will say February has to be my least favorite month as a missionary, for two reasons. One the super bowl, and second is Valentine's day. Missionary work seems to almost stop these days, and it is probably the worst day ever to try and find and teach. Although everything will be better than where I was last year. Having the super bowl and valentines day, and serving on a college campus was not fun... On Wednesday we got together with our Mission Leadership Council to plan a zone conference. We focused a lot on studying and basic teaching skills of missionaries. For example our mission used to have to find 5 people to have one baptism, and now we have to find 8 people to have one baptism. In layman's terms our mission is not as good as teaching. Although we are finding more. Nonetheless we planned a zone conference and I will be giving my last breakout training with my MTC companion, Elder Trindade. It should be a hoot! Focusin...

I Can Sleep When the Wind Blows

Hello Everybody! Sorry for my two week adsense. Transfers sure make me lose track of time and writing emails usually gets lost in the mix.  As I said before we had transfers this week! Which is always a hoot. We sent the transfer board out Sunday night, and it gets crazy Monday morning. Tuesday we had 10 new missionaries arrive to the mission. What we call "In-Coming Day" is one of my favorite days of the transfer, except for zone conferences. It is always fun to see the new missionaries and see how excited, or terrified, they are coming to the mission. The next day was "infield transfer" which is when everybody moves areas, and definitely is my least favorite day of the week. It is so hectic and everyone leaves stuff, anyway we made it through!  The rest of the week was great! We started to teach a part member family in some townhomes in the south end of our area. The wife grew up in the church, and the husband didn't. Recently they had a "come to Jesus ...

"Thou art neither cold nor hot"

Hello Everybody! What an amazing week it has been! Let me tell you a little bit about it.... Tuesday Elder Black and I had our lesson with our friend Werner, from South Africa. We haven't taught him before but had several interactions with the missionaries about 18 months ago. Finally we were able to go to his home and have a lesson with him. Werner attends a non-denominational Christian church in South Ogden. Werner had some pretty heavy concerns and misunderstanding when it came to church doctrine, and the Book of Mormon. Elder Black and I listened and explained parallels in our churches, and the differences. Werner tended to take some biblical passages out of context and would interpret them with his own meaning. We helped him to understand more context behind the scripture which can often give the passage different meaning. We concluded by helping Werner understand how reading the Book of Mormon would give Werner clarity. We committed him to read the Book of Mormon, and are mee...

T Minus 59 Days!

Hello Everybody! Sorry for being a little more dormant than usual on my weekly emails. I don't think I could ever have a better update for you all than these past two weeks!  Since we had our Mission Leadership council, both Christmas zone conferences, and Christmas all in the same week, things have been slower from the administrative side of things. Which is always a blessing, and leaves us with so much more time to work in our area!  Wednesday night last week we went out with a kid in our area preparing to serve a mission. His name is Aidan and he has his call to serve in the Texas Mcallen mission. He just got back from playing college football as a QB in Washington state. We went out with him all night and had some amazing experiences. Our big focus in this area has been visiting and setting up lessons with people who were taught in the past, had baptismal dates that didn't pan out, or attended church multiple times. I think we set up about 7 nonmember lessons that n...

A Not So Snowy Christmas

Image
Merry Christmas Everyone! I hope you have had an amazing week reflecting on the birth and life of the Savior! We had a great week! We had both zone conferences this week! It was as busy as I've ever been. We had to store half the Christmas packages at the mission office, and the other half at an old apartment nobody is using in the mission. Two Tuesday nights ago Elder Black and I had to take the mission truck and trailer and load them all! That was so much fun, we organized them all by zone which made it really easy unloading them after. Since we had to do so much setup for both zone conferences we set up the night before. One of the nights we stayed with one of the counselors in the mission presidency house, because driving back to Ogden and then back to Logan would've been too much. Both zone conferences were great! Our focus was on the spiritual side of things, which it definitely turned out to be. We did normal instruction in the morning, and then after lunch we made Chris...

Bluewash!

Hello Everyone! Monday we had to head to the Salt Lake airport at noon to grab an elder who got reassigned to our mission. After we grabbed him we headed to Logan and were able to attend a performance by Jenny Oaks Baker, President Oaks daughter. She performed a violin concert and we got to attend with the Scheltinga and a few other missionaries.  On top of that, this week was certainly one to remember. We made it through transfers. Which is always nice. Luckily we didn't have to move too many missionaries, and only about 9 came in from the MTC. After we got everyone to their new areas, it was time for Elder Black and I to head to our new area. We are now covering the stake that takes in the mission home. So we just moved from South Ogden to North Ogden (Pleasant View to be specific). Without any preparation we packed up our apartment, loaded up, and unpacked at the new place all in 2.5 hours! Right after that we went and worked the area. In the three days we have worked the...

30 Weeks Later!

Hello Everybody,  This week is the start of transfer week! Which means last week we spent a lot of time working on the transfer board with President Scheltinga, and figuring out who to move around, who to keep in what areas, and all the other considerations that go into transfers. It seems like there is more and more each transfer, hahaha. Elder Black and I will be going to a new area, but keeping our current assignment. We are going to be blue washing the area that has the mission home in it, up in North Ogden. Since it was just sisters there we will be blue washing, so it'll be a new experience for the both of us, but we couldn't be more excited!  With us moving areas this week, we spent a lot of our proselytizing time tying up loose ends, and preparing it for the white wash. We set up a lot of visits with stake and ward leaders for the new elders to meet, and set up a lot of lessons so they can hopefully meet the teaching pool within the first week. The sad part is that I s...
