Who does God's work will get God's pay!
Greetings Everyone! And happy start to February!
I will say February has to be my least favorite month as a missionary, for two reasons. One the super bowl, and second is Valentine's day. Missionary work seems to almost stop these days, and it is probably the worst day ever to try and find and teach. Although everything will be better than where I was last year. Having the super bowl and valentines day, and serving on a college campus was not fun...
On Wednesday we got together with our Mission Leadership Council to plan a zone conference. We focused a lot on studying and basic teaching skills of missionaries. For example our mission used to have to find 5 people to have one baptism, and now we have to find 8 people to have one baptism. In layman's terms our mission is not as good as teaching. Although we are finding more. Nonetheless we planned a zone conference and I will be giving my last breakout training with my MTC companion, Elder Trindade. It should be a hoot!
Focusing more on missionary work we had a very successful week! Elder Black and I were blessed to have found 3 people to teach this week. Which is a miracle because we didn't get to work out as much as we would've liked to, with all the administrative stuff. One of the people is a part member family in some trailer homes in the south west end of our area. His name is Jay and hers is Amy. They are pretty cool to interact with, but teaching is sometimes hard. Jay is really into reptiles, and he has like 4-5 snakes. Ranging from bull snakes to constrictors. Either way, not my cup of tea, but we managed to build up the nerve to hold one of his 3 month old hog-nose snakes. This was certainly a leap of faith!
On top of finding new people we have been able to meet with our friend Monica a lot this week. She works one week on, and one week off. So during her off week we try to meet at least 2 times, sometimes more. The sisters before were teaching her, and recently she has been making a lot of good progress. We have been focusing our lessons on helping her do the spiritual work needed to receive the witness she needs. She has definitely felt the spirit in our lessons, and better yet at church meetings. But has some worries about committing herself if her family (all latino Catholics) won't support it, and if she did it before knowing it was right. Some valid concerns for sure. Almost every lesson we have had with her the Stake Presidency 2nd counselor and his wife have been there. Most recently we committed her to make a study plan in the Gospel Library, and read the Book of Mormon daily!
This week is both our zone conferences! Wish us luck! I hope you all have a fantastic week.
Love you all,
Elder Glenn
Spiritual Thought
The Savior's greatest gift to us all, and mankind, was the sacrifice of his life. Our small gift to him can be the devotion of our lives in His service. Including the death of our old selves as we are 'reborn' in and through Him. In Hebrews 9:16-17 we read "for where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator...otherwise it is of no strength..." An alternative translation from the Greek text for "testament" is "covenant". We can make our witness to the Lord, and others, direct and unalterable when we let our old selves be "crucified with Christ" (Gal 2:20) as we daily recommit ourselves to follow and serve Him.
